Deep Reach Pool is a permanent, aquifer-fed waterhole on the Fortescue River within Millstream-Chichester National Park. Sacred to the Yindjibarndi people as the home of Barrimurdi (the Rainbow Serpent), this deep, clear pool offers striking Pilbara scenery nestled within red-ochre rock formations shaded by river gums. A 200m walk from the carpark leads to stepped entry points — ideal for swimming, kayaking, and cooling off in the arid outback. The park is open April to October, when conditions are safest and most pleasant.

Moderate risk: Extreme summer heat
Pilbara summer temperatures frequently exceed 45°C (113°F). The park is closed November to March due to extreme heat risk.
Low risk: Strong submerged currents
The pool is part of the Fortescue River system and can develop unseen subsurface currents after upstream rain or flood events.
Low risk: Freshwater catfish spines
Catfish inhabit the pool and their dorsal/pectoral spines can cause painful puncture wounds if stepped on or handled.
