The Curdies River mouth spills into Newfield Bay at Peterborough along the Great Ocean Road, forming a wide, sandy river-mouth snorkeling zone where freshwater meets the Southern Ocean. The sheltered inner estuary offers calm, shallow conditions near the sandy banks, while the outer break provides clearer ocean water over rocky reef edges. It's a dynamic, ever-changing environment shaped by tides and river flow — popular with locals for its golden sands, boat-launch access, and proximity to historic shipwreck sites offshore.

Moderate risk: River mouth current
Flowing river water meeting ocean swells can create strong outward currents, especially after heavy rain or on outgoing tide.
Moderate risk: Rip currents
Unpredictable rip currents can form across the sandbar at the river entrance, particularly with southerly swells.
Low risk: Shipwreck debris
Submerged wreckage of the Schomfield Rock clipper and other historical shipwrecks in the bay may present entanglement hazards.
