Crystal Caves is a stunning outer-reef snorkel and dive site off Lizard Island in the northern Great Barrier Reef. Named for its intricate network of overhanging ledges, swim-through tunnels, and small cave formations that filter sunlight into dazzling blue-green chambers, the site offers shallow coral gardens that drop off into deeper walls. The hard and soft coral coverage is exceptional, with bommies, gullies, and crevices sheltering a wealth of reef life. Its location on the outer ribbon reefs means clear visibility and relatively undisturbed marine ecosystems, making it a bucket-list spot for snorkelers exploring the far northern reaches of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

Moderate risk: Tidal current
Strong tidal currents can sweep through the channel between the outer ribbon reefs, especially during spring tides. Snorkelers should drift with the current and stay with their group.
Low risk: Ocean swell
The site is on the exposed outer reef and can experience moderate to strong ocean swell, particularly during southeast trade wind season.
Low risk: Sharp coral bommies
Coral bommies and overhanging ledges are numerous; snorkelers must be careful not to bump or scrape against sharp coral formations.
