Tucked beneath the dramatic basalt cliffs of Point Danger near Portland, Crumpet Beach (also called Crumpets Beach) is a wild, beautiful stretch of sand on Victoria's Discovery Coast. The water drops off quickly from the shore, reaching deeper channels that offer good visibility and interesting underwater topography. With small surf and clear blue waters, this beach provides a scenic snorkeling escape from the more crowded spots along the coast. The surrounding headland shelters the beach from the worst of the Southern Ocean swells, making it a rewarding shore-entry site for those keen to explore Victoria's rugged southwestern shoreline.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Southern Ocean swells

Exposed to Southern Ocean ground swells, conditions can change rapidly with increased wave height and stronger shore break.

  • Moderate risk: Rip currents

The steep beach profile and ocean swells can produce rip currents, especially during higher surf periods.

  • Low risk: Thick kelp in shallows

Large amounts of kelp can accumulate in the shallows, making entry and exit tricky and reducing visibility.

  • Low risk: Fishing activity

Local fishing activity may result in discarded hooks, lines, and sinkers in the water. Watch for active fishing lines.

  • Low risk: Variable surf conditions

Small surf can occur; conditions can change with swell and wind, affecting entry safety.

  • Low risk: Kelp in shallows

Thick kelp can make entry/exit tricky and may cause entanglement in shallows.

  • Low risk: Limited parking

Limited parking (approx. 3 cars) means early arrival is essential on busy days.

  • Low risk: Reef surge at ends

Swell and surge can push snorkellers into the reef at either end of the beach.

  • Low risk: Rapid depth drop-off

The water depth drops off fairly quickly from the shore, reaching 7+ metres soon after entry. Snorkelers should be confident in deeper water.

  • Low risk: Cold water temperatures

Temperate waters typical of western Victoria, often requiring a wetsuit for comfort year-round.
