Situated 40 minutes south of Perth on Cockburn Sound, Coogee Beach's permanent eco-shark barrier — a 400-metre circumference netted swimming enclosure — doubles as an artificial reef. Seaweed, sponges and hydroids colonise the mesh, drawing schools of goldlined bream, trevally, western smooth boxfish, fan-bellied leatherjackets and striped stripeys. The enclosure extends 50 metres offshore, reaching depths of up to 8 metres, offering a safe, family-friendly snorkel that feels like exploring a living underwater garden.

Moderate risk: Water depth beyond net
The net extends 50m offshore where depth reaches 8m — not suitable for weak swimmers who cannot float.
Low risk: Boat traffic near enclosure
Cockburn Sound has recreational and commercial boat traffic; stay within the net boundary.
Low risk: Fishing activity at nearby jetty
The adjacent Ammo Jetty is popular for fishing and jetty jumping; avoid that area during peak times.
Low risk: Afternoon sea breeze chop
Westerly winds pick up around midday, creating waves and reducing visibility — snorkel early morning.
