Moderate risk: Tidal currents
Tidal flows between the 42 islands can create strong currents, especially near channels. Snorkeling is best on slack tide.
Moderate risk: Remote location
No facilities or emergency services on the islands. Self-sufficiency required. Mobile reception is limited.
Low risk: Boat traffic
The Dampier Archipelago is popular with recreational and commercial boats. Snorkelers should display a dive flag and remain vigilant.
Low risk: Marine stingers
Box jellyfish and Irukandji may be present in warmer months (November to April). Protective stinger suits recommended.
Low risk: Sharp coral & rocks
Shallow reef bommies with sharp coral heads. Snorkelers should wear fins and avoid standing on coral.
