Cockermouth Island is a secluded gem in the southern Whitsundays, part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Its western side features a stunning Bahamas-style lagoon with shallow turquoise waters that teem with marine life. Massive tidal movements (up to 8 metres) keep sediment off the coral, resulting in exceptionally healthy fringing reefs with vibrant coral bommies. This near-pristine, uninhabited island offers world-class snorkelling right off the beach, with crystal-clear waters where turtles, stingrays, and reef fish are abundant. Largely unknown to tourists, Cockermouth remains a well-kept secret for eco-conscious adventurers seeking a true tropical paradise.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • High risk: Remote location — no facilities or communications

The island is remote with no facilities, drinking water, or mobile reception. Any injury or stranding could be serious without a pre-arranged boat pickup.

  • Moderate risk: Strong tidal currents

Tidal range reaches up to 8 metres, creating strong currents through the lagoon channels as water moves in and out. Snorkellers should be aware of tidal state before entering the water.

  • Low risk: Small reef sharks in lagoon

Small reef sharks (typically under 2 feet) cruise the shallow lagoon daily. They are non-aggressive and quickly retreat, but may startle inexperienced swimmers.
