Clovelly Beach is a narrow, sheltered bay nestled between rocky headlands on Sydney's eastern coastline. Part of the Bronte-Coogee Aquatic Reserve, this tranquil snorkelling haven boasts calm, clear waters thanks to its protected geography. Concrete promenades line both sides of the bay, creating a European feel, with easy water entry via ladders. Beneath the surface, kelp forests, rocky reefs, and sandflats host a dazzling array of temperate marine life. The resident celebrity is the friendly Blue Groper, a massive blue wrasse that often approaches snorkellers. With its safe, wave-free conditions and remarkable biodiversity, Clovelly is Sydney's premier spot for beginner and family snorkelling.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Outgoing tide current

The narrow bay entrance can create a noticeable outgoing current during falling tides, which may pull swimmers toward the open ocean.

  • Low risk: Slippery concrete ramps

The concrete entry ramps and platforms can become very slippery when wet, especially at the water's edge where algae form.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic

Small boats and kayaks use the bay; snorkelers should stay aware of vessel activity near the entrance channel.

  • Low risk: Slippery concrete platforms

The concrete promenades and ladders can become extremely slippery when wet, posing a slip hazard when entering or exiting the water.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic near bay entrance

The mouth of the bay is used by small boats and jet skis, particularly on weekends. Snorkellers should stay inside the marked swimming area.
