The Clarence River breakwalls at Yamba and Iluka form the twin rocky arms of Australia's largest river mouth on the east coast, where the mighty Clarence meets the Pacific. Snorkelers explore the boulder-lined wall edges where calm inshore spots offer clear water on a low swell. The Iluka side (south of the breakwall) and the Yamba side both provide shore-entry snorkelling around the rock habitat, with the river current adding a dynamic edge. The Iluka breakwall separates Andersons Beach from Iluka Beach, while the nearby Bluff Beach sweeps north to Frazers Reef — a secluded snorkel spot. Dolphins and migrating whales (May–Nov) are often visible from the walls.

Moderate risk: Tidal current at river mouth
The Clarence River outflow creates strong tidal currents where the river meets the ocean, especially on an outgoing tide. Snorkel near the walls inside the river entrance in calm conditions.
Moderate risk: Boat traffic
The Clarence River entrance is a busy commercial and recreational boating channel with ferries, fishing boats, and vessels crossing the bar. Stay well clear of the main navigation channel.
Low risk: Ocean swell and shorebreak
When an easterly swell pushes in, the exposed sections of the breakwall can experience dumping waves and surging water. Snorkel on low-swell days only.
Low risk: Sharp rock/barnacle encrustation
The breakwall boulders are covered in sharp barnacles and oysters. Wear reef shoes or booties and avoid climbing on the rocks.
