Clam Gardens in Watsons Bay is Lizard Island's premier snorkeling destination, set against the turquoise waters of the northern Great Barrier Reef. Just a short walk from the resort, you can swim metres offshore to discover a vibrant underwater garden of giant clams (Tridacna gigas) with their vividly coloured mantles, alongside bommies of healthy coral. The shallow, protected bay offers exceptional visibility and calm conditions, making it easy to float over schools of reef fish, inquisitive parrotfish, and the occasional tawny nurse shark resting on the sandy bottom. This is one of the most accessible and rewarding snorkel sites on the reef.

Moderate risk: Marine stingers (box jellyfish)
Marine stingers (box jellyfish) may be present in the warmer months along the northern Great Barrier Reef.
Low risk: Tidal exposure (low tide)
Best accessed at high tide — low tide exposes shallow coral heads and reduces swim clearance over the clam beds.
Low risk: Outgoing tide current
Strong currents can occasionally develop around the bay entrance during tidal changes.
