Christies Beach, just 35 minutes south of Adelaide, offers two distinct snorkeling experiences. At the southern end, a shallow, lesser-known reef lies close to shore — a gem for spotting egg-laying Port Jackson sharks in November and December as they shelter under weed-covered rock ledges. For more experienced snorkelers, Horseshoe Reef sits 350 m offshore from the surf club, where the horseshoe-shaped reef teems with silver drummer, leatherjackets, dusky morwongs, and eagle rays. The long sandy beach is backed by the striking golden cliffs of Witton Bluff, which shelter the bay from prevailing winds.

Moderate risk: Strong currents around Horseshoe Reef
The 350 m swim to Horseshoe Reef is in open water; currents and swells can be challenging for weaker swimmers.
Moderate risk: Open water swim to reef
Horseshoe Reef requires a 350 m swim from shore in open water. Not suitable for novice swimmers or those lacking confidence in deeper water.
Low risk: Exposed reef at low tide
At very low tides some sections of the reef become exposed, reducing available snorkeling area. Plan for low tide but avoid the lowest extremes.
Low risk: Shallow reef ledges at low tide
At low tide the reef ledges are very shallow and exposed; entering at mid-tide is recommended.
Low risk: Choppy conditions in south/southwest wind
A south or southwesterly breeze can make the water choppy; aim for a calm day with easterly or northerly winds.
