China Wall is a remarkable dive and snorkel site on the exposed eastern side of Moreton Island, reachable only by boat from Brisbane or the Gold Coast. Unlike most subtropical Queensland reefs, this site is dominated by waving beds of brown kelp — more typical of southern Australia — creating a surreal backdrop where tropical reef fish dart among cold-water seaweed. Beneath the surface, depths range from 16–32 metres, with rocky terrain carved into caves, gutters, walls, and a striking rock arch. Soft corals, gorgonians, and black coral trees decorate the ledges, while abundant yellowtail, bullseyes, trevally, kingfish, and wobbegong sharks patrol the kelp beds.

Moderate risk: Strong currents on exposed eastern side
The site faces the open Pacific Ocean on the exposed eastern side of Moreton Island, where ocean swells and currents can be strong and unpredictable.
Moderate risk: Deep depths (16–32 m)
Snorkelers and divers must contend with depths between 16 and 32 metres, requiring good buoyancy control and fitness.
Low risk: Boat traffic
Access is exclusively by boat from tour operators; boat traffic in the area requires vigilance at the surface.
Low risk: Cold water thermoclines
Kelp-dominated waters can experience sudden cold thermoclines, even in summer, reducing visibility and increasing chill.

Getting in
China Wall is located on the eastern side of Moreton Island, approximately 25 km northeast of Brisbane. Access is by boat only — typically via tour operators such as Brisbane Scuba or Tangalooma Island Resort. The Micat vehicle barge from Brisbane provides 4WD access to Moreton Island, but the dive site itself requires a boat to reach from the island's eastern shore.
Park at the boat ramp or barge terminal at Holt Street, Pinkenba (Brisbane). A valid Moreton Island Recreation Area Vehicle Access Permit (VAP) is required if taking a 4WD onto the island via the Micat barge.
Dive/snorkel tours start from approximately $160–$250 per person. A valid Vehicle Access Permit (VAP) is required for 4WD vehicles on Moreton Island (fee applies).
