Tucked away on the western coast of Haslewood Island, Chalkie's Beach is a serene slice of paradise featuring the same dazzling white silica sand as its famous neighbour Whitehaven Beach, but with far fewer crowds. The calm turquoise waters lap against a fringing coral reef that is easily accessible from shore, making it a top-tier snorkelling destination within the Whitsundays. A short 300-metre walk leads to Haslewood Lookout, rewarding visitors with panoramic views across the Coral Sea. The beach is accessible only by boat, with public moorings available for those on bareboat charters.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Marine stingers

Stingers (box jellyfish) may be present in Whitsunday waters during the warmer months. Wear a stinger suit if swimming between October and May.

  • Low risk: Steep drop-off beyond reef edge

The fringing reef drops off steeply from the shore. Swimmers should be aware of the sudden depth change and avoid venturing beyond the protected reef edge.

  • Low risk: Tidal currents

Strong tidal currents can flow through the Whitsunday passages, particularly around the northern reef edge at Chalkie's Beach.

  • Low risk: Sun exposure

Sun exposure is intense year-round; limited shade exists on the beach with no structures.

  • Low risk: Tide-dependent reef access

The best snorkelling occurs at low to mid-tide when the fringing reef is easily accessible. At high tide, the reef is deeper and currents may be stronger.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic

Vessel traffic in the passage between Haslewood and Whitsunday Islands can create hazards for snorkellers near the reef edge.

  • Low risk: Steep reef drop-off

The fringing reef drops off steeply into deeper water. Snorkellers should be mindful of the sudden depth change and stay within their comfort zone.

  • Low risk: Tidal timing for snorkelling

Snorkelling is best at mid-to-low tide when the coral reef is shallow enough to explore. At high tide, the reef is deeper and marine life may be less visible.

Getting in

Boat
Entry

Chalkie's Beach is on the western coast of Haslewood Island in the Whitsundays. Accessible by boat tours from Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island (e.g., Explore Group, ZigZag Whitsundays). Bareboaters can use one of 10 public moorings — anchoring is not permitted due to the steep drop-off and fringing reef.

Parking & facilities

Park at the Shute Harbour or Airlie Beach public car parks (paid parking, rates vary by duration). From there, join a tour or charter a boat to reach the beach — there is no parking on Haslewood Island itself, as it is a national park island with no road access.
