The spot

The Cervantes snorkeling reef areas lie within the Jurien Bay Marine Park, where an extensive limestone reef system runs parallel to the shore, creating a vast shallow lagoon of crystal-clear turquoise water. Snorkel directly off the beach at spots like Hangover Bay — stick to the left cliff wall for the best reef views — or explore the shallow bommies and seagrass meadows teeming with juvenile fish. This protected marine park is the only major breeding area for Australian sea lions along WA's west coast, and the calm, sheltered waters make for magical encounters with playful sea lions, dolphins, and vibrant marine life just metres from the sand.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Shallow reef bommies

Some limestone bommies rise to within 2–3 metres of the surface, posing a collision risk for snorkelers who are not watching the bottom profile.

  • Low risk: Southerly wind chop

Afternoon sea breezes can create choppy conditions on the surface, reducing visibility and making swimming harder for less confident snorkelers.

  • Low risk: Shifting sand over dive trail

The Jurien Bay Underwater Interpretive Snorkel Trail has become covered with sand over time — navigation markers and reef balls may be buried or hard to locate.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic near launch areas

Small vessels can be launched at Cervantes, and the marina area at Jurien Bay sees frequent boat traffic — stay aware near access channels and ramp zones.

  • Low risk: Afternoon sea breeze chop

Strong afternoon sea breezes (October–March) can create choppy surface conditions and reduce visibility. Best snorkelled in the morning.

  • Low risk: Sharp limestone reef

Limestone reef bommies close to shore can be sharp underfoot. Wear protective footwear and avoid standing on marine growth.
