Cemetery Bay is a serene 400-metre golden-sand beach on Norfolk Island's south coast, tucked beside the historic Kingston cemetery and the World Heritage-listed convict settlement. Black volcanic rock, reef pools, and healthy coral gardens grow right up to the shoreline, making it a fascinating spot for shore-based snorkelling at mid to high tide. The beach is also the island's unofficial dog beach, where locals bring their pups for an evening run. Low tide reveals crystal-clear rock pools teeming with small fish, anemones, and vibrant corals, while the offshore reef break draws surfers. Views across the bay to Nepean Island and Phillip Island add to the dramatic setting.

Moderate risk: Strong currents and rips
Cemetery Bay is exposed to ocean swell and conditions can change rapidly. Strong currents and rips can form, especially during larger swells.
Moderate risk: Ocean swell and shore break
The open ocean swell can produce strong shore break and dumping waves, particularly during southerly swells.
Low risk: Sharp calcarenite rocks
Jagged calcarenite (limestone rock) edges the shoreline and shallow reef. Sharp rocks can cut bare feet.
Low risk: Shallow reef at low tide
Water depth is shallow at low tide, exposing sharp reef and coral. Snorkeling is best at mid to high tide when the water is deep enough to clear the rocky bottom.
Low risk: Changing ocean conditions
The ocean conditions at Cemetery Bay can change quickly. Swell and wave action can pick up unexpectedly, creating challenging conditions for swimmers and snorkellers.
Low risk: Reef break currents
An offshore reef break creates surf conditions that can produce strong localised currents, especially at higher tides or during southerly swells.
Low risk: Fragile coral reef
Delicate living corals grow right up to the beach. Snorkellers must avoid standing on or touching the coral to prevent damage and injury.
