The southern headland of historic Catherine Hill Bay offers a cluster of excellent shore-entry dive and snorkel sites with depths ranging from 3 to 30 metres. This rugged headland is studded with dozens of swim-throughs, overhangs, and rocky channels to explore, including the popular Desoto Inlet — a long narrow inlet with vertical walls and large overhangs. The underwater terrain transitions from boulders and kelp beds to vast pebble slopes, with the remains of the old coal loader jetty and the wreck of the SS Wallarah nearby. As a former coal-mining village, the bay's coal seams are even visible in the cliff faces and rock platforms, adding a unique geological backdrop. Named after the Catherine Hill shipwrecked here in 1867, this spot offers protected inshore waters ideal for beginners and deeper offshore drops for advanced snorkelers and divers.

Moderate risk: Swell and surge
In bigger swells, exiting at Desoto Inlet can be dangerous. Exit is best attempted from the smaller northern inlet or on calm, millpond days.
Moderate risk: Outgoing tide current
The tidal flow around the headland can create strong outgoing currents pushing snorkelers away from shore. Best snorkeled on a slack or incoming tide.
Low risk: Locked gate access track
The access track passes through Wallarah Colliery land and may be locked or gated. The gate was historically welded shut; check current access with local dive shops before travelling.
Low risk: Uneven rock entry
Entry points involve walking over uneven rock platforms and a broken stainless steel ladder at Desoto Inlet. Requires care when carrying gear.
Low risk: Variable depths and drop-offs
Depths range from 3m inshore to 30m offshore, with sudden depth changes from shallow reef to deeper pebble slopes. Snorkelers should stay aware of depth transitions.
Low risk: Kelp beds
Dense kelp grows on the rocks at shallower depths, which can entangle fins and reduce visibility for inexperienced snorkelers.
Low risk: Boat traffic near jetty
The old coal loader jetty and surrounding waters are used by boats and kayakers. Snorkelers should stay vigilant and avoid the central channel.

Getting in
From Sydney, take the F3 (M1) and exit at Toukley/Doyalson. Head north on the Old Pacific Highway past Doyalson and Munmorah. Look for a mining road (Moonee Colliery / Catherine Hill Bay sign) on the right. Alternatively, take the well-signposted road from the north which passes through the village past the bowling club to the beach. Park near the Wallarah Colliery carpark, then take the dirt track at the back of the carpark to the locked gate (access permission required). The track winds down to a grassed area between Catherine Hill Bay and Moonee Beach.
Small carpark near Wallarah Colliery (check gate access). Street parking available in Catherine Hill Bay village near the surf club. Free parking.
No fees. Access via private mining land may require permission or key from local dive shops.
