Moderate risk: Strong tidal currents
Catchers Mitt is on the remote outer reef shelf with strong tidal flows. Currents can sweep snorkelers along the wall, requiring good fitness and confidence in open water.
Moderate risk: Marine stingers (jellyfish)
Stinger season in tropical north Queensland brings box jellyfish and Irukandji into the water, particularly during the warmer months (October to May).
Low risk: Deep open water
The site features deep water right up to the reef edge with no sheltered shallow lagoon. Snorkelers must be comfortable in deep open ocean conditions.
