Cape Nelson State Park, on Victoria's rugged Discovery Coast near Portland, offers spectacular shore diving and snorkelling along a coastline of volcanic reefs, rocky headlands, and sheltered sandy bays. The park's exposed southern shores drop into cool, nutrient-rich Southern Ocean waters, creating a dynamic underwater landscape of basalt boulders, kelp forests, and gutters teeming with life. Entry points vary from protected coves to more exposed reef ledges, rewarding those who pick calm conditions with encounters with wobbegong sharks, rays, and schooling fish amid dramatic sea cliffs and the historic Cape Nelson Lighthouse towering above.

Moderate risk: Swell and Surge
The Southern Ocean produces powerful, unpredictable swell that can create dangerous surge along rocky shore entry points, especially on exposed reef dives.
Moderate risk: Strong Currents
Tidal flows and ocean currents can be strong around the headland, particularly during tide changes, making shore exits challenging.
Moderate risk: Rugged Shore Entry
Entry and exit are over slippery boulders and uneven volcanic rock platforms, with no formal boat ramp or sheltered beach in most shore dive locations.
Low risk: Cold Water Temperature
Water temperatures range from 12-18°C year-round, posing cold-water shock and hypothermia risk without adequate exposure protection.
Low risk: Limited Visibility
Visibility can drop suddenly after weather changes or swell events; often variable between 3-10 metres even on good days.
