Cape Conran Coastal Park spans Victoria's wild far-east Wilderness Coast, where the South Pacific Ocean meets dramatic granite headlands and sandy beaches. The general swimming and diving area encompasses West Cape Beach and Joiner's Channel, offering access to a diverse underwater ecosystem of rocky reefs, kelp forests, and sandy gutters. Snorkelers can drift over vibrant sponge gardens and explore the submerged granite boulders teeming with fish life. From May to October, migrating humpback and southern right whales pass offshore, while dolphins frequently surf the waves. This is one of Gippsland's premier ocean entry points for discovering Victoria's temperate marine world.

Moderate risk: Swell and surge
Exposed reefs can experience strong ocean swell and surge, especially in southerly winds, making conditions challenging for less experienced snorkelers.
Moderate risk: Open ocean swells and surf
West Cape Beach is exposed to the Southern Ocean, with strong surf and dumping waves that can be hazardous for inexperienced swimmers and snorkelers.
Moderate risk: Variable water visibility and currents
Ocean conditions can change rapidly; strong currents and rip flows are possible around the headlands and channel areas.
Low risk: Strong currents
Tidal currents can be strong around the rocky headland and offshore reefs.
Low risk: Sharp rock and barnacles
Granite boulders and barnacle-covered rocks along the shore can cause cuts and scrapes. Sturdy reef shoes or booties recommended.
Low risk: Variable visibility
Water clarity can vary significantly depending on swell, wind, and recent weather. Best visibility is typically in autumn and after calm conditions.
Low risk: Boat ramp traffic
The West Cape boat ramp area has vessel launching and retrieval traffic; snorkelers should stay clear of the ramp zone.
Low risk: Slippery boat ramp and rocky shoreline
The boat ramp is often coated with sand and kelp, making it extremely slippery. Rocks along the shore can also be treacherous.
Low risk: Marine stingers and cold water
Temperate waters with potential for bluebottle jellyfish (Physalia) and cold shock risk in southern ocean temperatures below 18°C.
