The spot

Community-maintained

Community contribution: submitted by Daniel

Named for six rusted cannons clustered in two groups on the seabed, Cannons is a unique wreck-and-reef dive inside the Cocos (Keeling) Islands lagoon. Shallow depths of 8–12 metres reveal scattered metallic wreckage, vibrant coral bommies, and a stunning array of marine life. The site is famous for sightings of the endemic Cocos Pygmy Angelfish, alongside reef sharks, turtles, manta rays, parrotfish, and octopus. With crystal-clear turquoise water and average 25-metre visibility, this spot offers a fascinating blend of history and thriving reef ecology.

  • Moderate risk: Lagoon tidal currents

Tidal currents flow through the lagoon entrance and can be moderate to strong, particularly during tidal changes.

  • Low risk: Submerged wreck debris

Metallic wreckage debris and scattered cannons on the seabed pose a snagging risk for snorkelers and divers.
