Cable Bommie is a fascinating reef-and-relic snorkel site tucked inside the turquoise lagoon of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, near Direction Island. The site gets its name from the historic communication cables — and other sunken equipment — that lie scattered across the sandy bottom beside a coral-covered bommie (reef pinnacle). Snorkelers drift over colourful coral heads teeming with tropical fish, while the iron relics below add a unique wreck-like feel. Currents can be present, making this a site best suited to those with some experience. The clear, warm lagoon waters and abundant marine life make it a memorable stop on any Cocos snorkel itinerary.

Low risk: Tidal currents
The site sits near a coral ridge where tidal currents can be moderate to strong, especially around changing tides. Drift snorkeling conditions are common.
Low risk: Submerged wreckage and cables
Historic cables, anchors, and metal debris lie on the seabed and can be sharp or snag fins and exposed skin.
Low risk: Shallow coral bommies
Coral bommies and reef structures rise from the bottom — careless finning can cause injury to both snorkeler and coral.
