Byron Bay Main Beach is the vibrant, patrolled heart of Byron Bay's coastline, stretching along the arc of Cape Byron Marine Park. The famous SS Wollongbar shipwreck — "The Wreck" — lies just 30 metres offshore, its rusted remains poking above the surface and acting as an artificial reef teeming with bream, kingfish, and wobbegong sharks. Protected by the headland, the waters here are generally calm and clear, making it ideal for beginner snorkellers who want to swim over a century-old wreck while schools of fish swirl beneath them. Main Beach's central location, backed by grassy lawns and a surf club, means everything is steps away from the sand.

Moderate risk: Boat traffic
Main Beach sees jet skis, boats, and inflatable craft launching from the beach and passing close to the wreck area; stay vigilant and use a dive float.
Low risk: The Wreck (SS Wollongbar) submerged debris
The shipwreck has exposed metal and debris just below the surface that can cause cuts or entanglement; stay near the visible portions and avoid touching the structure.
Low risk: Surf break waves near wreck
The Wreck is also a popular surf break — waves breaking over the shallow reef and wreck can create turbulent conditions for snorkellers, especially on a rising swell.
Low risk: Bluebottle jellyfish
Bluebottle (Physalia physalis) stings are common on Byron Bay beaches, especially during northerly winds from spring through autumn.
