Stretching along the rugged coastline between Inverloch and Cape Paterson in South Gippsland, Bunurong Marine Park is famed for its extensive intertidal rock platforms blanketed in pink coralline algae. At low tide, shallow pools among the sandstone platforms become natural aquariums teeming with life — perfect for snorkeling or rockpooling. The park protects 87+ species of fish and remarkable invertebrate communities, with Flat Rocks offering particularly large, sheltered pools ideal for calm-weather snorkeling. This is a wild, windswept shoreline where the Southern Ocean meets ancient rock formations.

High risk: Swell and wave surge
Open to Southern Ocean swells; unexpected waves can surge across the flat platforms, sweeping snorkelers off their feet
Moderate risk: Slippery rock surfaces
The intertidal platforms are covered in coralline algae which becomes extremely slippery when wet, posing a fall hazard when entering or exiting the water
Low risk: Low tide timing
Access to rock platforms is best within an hour of low tide; at high tide the platforms are submerged and snorkeling near them can be hazardous
Low risk: Sharp rocks and sea urchins
Rock platforms contain sharp sandstone edges and sea urchins; cuts and puncture wounds are common without protective footwear
