Just north of Byron Bay, the Brunswick River transforms at high tide into a crystal-clear freshwater paradise perfect for snorkelling. The gentle current flows past the historic timber bridge and through the Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve, where sandy riverbeds and submerged rocks create a unique inland snorkelling experience. Unlike choppy ocean beaches, the river offers calm, protected conditions that reveal a surprising underwater world of fish, eels, and freshwater rays. The best snorkel zone lies between Torakina Beach and the bridge, where the tidal inflow brings clean, translucent water from the sea.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Tidal Currents

The river is affected by tidal flows. Snorkel only on rising/incoming high tide when water is clearest and currents are gentlest. Outgoing tide can create stronger flow near the river mouth.

  • Low risk: Boat Traffic

The river is used by small boats and kayaks, especially near the boat ramp and marina area. Stay near the shore and remain aware of your surroundings.

  • Low risk: Tidal Current

The river current can strengthen significantly on the outgoing tide, making it harder to stay in position. Snorkel only on or approaching high tide.

  • Low risk: Limited Mobile Reception

Mobile phone coverage is limited in the Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve area, making emergency calls difficult.
