Browns Creek is a rocky coastal inlet along Victoria's Great Ocean Road, known for its sheltered tidal pools and reef flats that offer calm snorkeling conditions when seas are settled. The creek mouth forms a shallow lagoon over sandstone and basalt reef platforms, home to encrusting algae, crabs, and small reef fish. Its proximity to the Great Ocean Road makes it a quiet alternative to busier surf beaches, though access is best at low tide when the reef pools are clearest.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Swell surge at creek mouth

Ocean swell can push unpredictably into the narrow creek entrance, creating surge zones over the reef flats.

  • Low risk: Low tide reef exposure

At low tide the reef flats become very shallow, limiting swimming depth and exposing sharp sandstone/basalt rock.

  • Low risk: Changing tidal currents

Tidal exchange through the creek mouth can create moderate currents, especially during outgoing tide.
