The spot

Community contribution: submitted by Daniel

The Brook Islands Group surrounds encompass three pristine, uninhabited national park islands (North, Tween, and Middle) nestled in the Coral Sea about 20 km east of Cardwell. These islands are ringed by fringing coral reefs that offer excellent snorkeling in the warm, clear waters of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The reefs drop off from shallow sandy flats into deeper coral gardens teeming with marine life. The isolation of the islands — accessible only by boat or sea kayak — means the reefs are far less frequented than more popular spots, giving snorkelers a wild, remote experience amid healthy coral formations and abundant fish.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Stinging jellyfish (marine stingers)

Marine stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are present in the waters around the islands during the warmer months from November to May.

  • Moderate risk: Remote location — no facilities

The islands are remote with no ranger presence, no fresh water, no facilities, and limited mobile reception.

  • Moderate risk: Tidal currents between islands

Strong tidal currents can run through the channels between the three islands, especially during spring tides.

  • Moderate risk: Marine stingers (box jellyfish)

Marine stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are present in the waters of northern Queensland during the warmer months.

  • Low risk: Tidal currents

Strong tidal currents flow through Rockingham Bay and between the islands, affecting snorkeling conditions.

  • Low risk: Remote location — no facilities on islands

The islands are remote and uninhabited with no lifeguards, medical facilities, or fresh water — self-sufficiency is essential.

  • Low risk: Sharp coral and reef edges

Exposed reef edges and bommies can have sharp coral; cuts and scrapes are possible if snorkelers are not careful with buoyancy.
