The Gold Coast Broadwater is a vast, protected estuarine bay stretching between Southport and The Spit, sheltered from the open ocean by the South Stradbroke Island sandbar and the Seaway. Its calm, shallow waters and sandy flats are the gateway to Wave Break Island, a purpose-built artificial reef teeming with subtropical fish, rays, and turtles. Paddling across the glassy Broadwater at sunrise, with the Gold Coast skyline rising behind you and dolphins often surfacing nearby, is a quintessential Queensland snorkeling experience. The mix of seagrass meadows, sandy bottoms, and rocky reef structures creates diverse micro-habitats accessible even to beginners.
