Boulder Reef is a roughly circular, flat-topped platform reef approximately 4 km in diameter, situated on the inner shelf of the Great Barrier Reef about 20 km east of Cooktown. This mid-shelf reef rises from the sapphire-blue Coral Sea, its broad shallow reef flat crowned with coral gardens and bomboras that break the surface at low tide. The reef's position near the Endeavour River mouth funnels nutrients that sustain dense coral communities, making it a vibrant underwater destination. Snorkellers drift over table corals, branching Acropora thickets, and sandy gutters where marine life converges. Access is exclusively by boat tour from Cooktown, typically a 30–40 minute ride, and the site is prized for its relative solitude compared to more crowded outer-reef pontoon locations.

High risk: Stinging jellyfish (box jellyfish / Irukandji)
Stinger season runs November through May in Far North Queensland waters. A stinger suit is strongly recommended during these months.
Moderate risk: Strong tidal currents
Tidal flows can be vigorous around the reef edge and over the flat, particularly on spring tides. Snorkellers should stay alert and avoid venturing beyond the protected leeward side.
Low risk: Sharp coral and bommies
Shallow coral bommies and exposed reef flats can cause cuts and scrapes. Wear reef-safe boots and avoid touching any coral.
Low risk: Limited shade and sun exposure
Open reef flat with no shelter — intense tropical sun increases dehydration and sunburn risk. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and plenty of water.
Low risk: Remote location — no on-site facilities
Boulder Reef is an uninhabited reef platform with no amenities; all provisions must be carried by the charter vessel.

Boulder Reef lies approximately 20 km east of Cooktown, accessible only by boat. Local charter operators such as Cooktown Barrier Reef Charters run regular snorkelling trips to the reef, with a transit time of roughly 30–40 minutes from the Cooktown boat ramp.
Available at the Endeavour River boat ramp and nearby public car parks in Cooktown. Arrive early to secure a spot on busy days.
Access to the reef itself is free, but a paid charter tour (typically $120–$200 AUD per person including equipment, lunch, and guiding) is required as there is no public ferry service.
