Point Danger marks the southern boundary of Discovery Bay, where the Southern Ocean swells crash against a rugged headland of limestone cliffs. The "bommie" (a local term for an offshore reef/shoal) that extends from the point creates a dramatic snorkeling experience over boulder gardens, kelp forests, and rocky ledges. This exposed site offers clear oceanic water when conditions are calm, with the reward of exploring a dynamic reef ecosystem shaped by the powerful swell of Victoria's wild west coast.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • High risk: Southern Ocean Swell

Large, powerful swells from the Southern Ocean create dangerous breaking waves over the bommie, especially in winter.

  • High risk: Strong Riptides and Surge

Powerful tidal currents and surge around the headland can quickly sweep snorkelers offshore.

  • Moderate risk: Exposed Location

Point Danger is fully exposed to wind and weather; conditions can change rapidly with little shelter.

  • Low risk: Low Water Temperatures

Water temperatures remain cold year-round (12-18°C), requiring a thick wetsuit and exposing snorkelers to hypothermia risk.
