Bombora Reef, also known as Jibbon Bombora, is a submerged rocky reef just outside Port Hacking, approximately 25 km south of Sydney in the Royal National Park. This spectacular offshore reef features a flat top that drops in a series of stair-like walls from 10 m down to 24 m, with huge boulders, massive swim-throughs, and colourful sponges, sea squirts and gorgonians coating the rock surfaces. Known locally as a superb dive and snorkel site, it's only accessible by boat and best visited in calm conditions when the swell doesn't break over the shallow reef top. Huge schools of silver sweep, yellowtail, sea pike and one-spot pullers swarm the walls, while weedy sea dragons and giant cuttlefish are regular sightings.

Moderate risk: Breaking swell over shallow reef
In large seas, waves break over the entire length of the reef which sits only ~4 m deep. Only accessible in very calm conditions.
Moderate risk: Deep drop-offs
Reef drops in walls from 4 m to 10 m, then 12 m, 18 m, and 24 m — snorkelers must stay aware of depth changes.
Low risk: Boat traffic
Access is via boat with parachute-style exit. Boat traffic in Port Hacking and around the reef can pose a hazard.
Low risk: Strong currents
Offshore reef with potential for tidal movement and currents, especially around the drop-offs and walls.
