Blizzard Ridge is a renowned dive site in Lighthouse Bay on the Ningaloo Reef, named for the swirling blizzard of fish that engulfs this small underwater ridge at around 12–15 metres depth. Located off the coast near Exmouth, it is a magnet for immense schools of tropical fish, reef sharks, moray eels, turtles, and sea snakes. The ridge acts as a natural meeting point for marine life, delivering a sensory overload of colour and movement that makes every immersion unforgettable. Accessible only by boat due to its offshore position, Blizzard Ridge offers advanced snorkellers and divers a front-row seat to one of Australia's richest reef ecosystems.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Strong drift current

Moderate to strong currents are frequent and drive the drift dive experience; can sweep divers rapidly along the reef face.

  • Moderate risk: Deep drop-off

The ridge drops from 12m to well beyond 30m, posing risks for inexperienced divers swimming beyond planned depth limits.

  • Moderate risk: Strong currents

Drift currents can be strong and unpredictable in Lighthouse Bay, requiring good fitness and situational awareness.

  • Moderate risk: Depth hazard

Blizzard Ridge sits at 12–15 metres depth, making it unsuitable for inexperienced snorkellers. Proper buoyancy control is essential.

  • Moderate risk: Marine stingers

Box jellyfish and Irukandji may be present during the warmer months. Wearing a stinger suit is recommended.

  • Low risk: Ocean swell

Swell can affect conditions from November to February, making boat entry/exit challenging.

  • Low risk: Boat-only access

This offshore site is only reachable by boat from Exmouth; missing the drift pickup could be hazardous.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic

The site is accessed by boat and sits in a busy tour vessel area. Snorkellers and divers must be aware of boat movements and surface traffic.
