Blairgowrie Pier and its adjacent breakwater on Port Phillip's southern shore is one of the world's finest temperate-water pier dives. Built by the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron, its pylons and wave-screen walls are blanketed in dazzling sponge gardens — vivid yellows, oranges, pinks and whites — that host over 100 nudibranch species, seahorses, giant cuttlefish, and the famous winter Giant Spider Crab aggregation. A purpose-built snorkel entry platform at the jetty makes access easy, while the sheltered marina waters keep conditions calm. This working marina is a living aquarium of macro life, perfect for photographers and underwater explorers.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Boat traffic in active marina

Blairgowrie is a busy working marina with hundreds of boats mooring, launching and refuelling. Snorkellers must stay vigilant and keep clear of vessel channels.

  • Moderate risk: Low beams and pylons overhead

The underside of the pier has many low crossbeams and pylons that snorkellers can bump into, especially at higher tides when clearance is reduced.

  • Low risk: Outgoing tide current through The Heads

A constant flow of nutrients washes through Port Phillip Heads, which can create noticeable currents around the breakwater. Changing tides affect water movement.

  • Low risk: Cold water temperatures

Water temperatures range from 17–22°C year-round, with thermoclines common. Cold shock risk for poorly equipped snorkellers, especially outside summer.
