Community contribution: submitted by Daniel

A 700 m crescent of pale sand curving between Boronia Hill and Flowerpot Point on the Derwent Estuary, Blackmans Bay Beach offers clear, cold, sheltered waters ideal for snorkeling. The north end reveals a fascinating blowhole and extensive rock platforms where divers regularly explore, while the south end features tessellated sandstone formations and a secluded cobbled beach. The water is usually calm with rare surf, making it a safe and accessible temperate snorkeling destination just minutes from Hobart.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Cold water temperature

Cold southern-ocean water temperatures year-round; even in summer, extended snorkeling requires a good wetsuit.

  • Low risk: Stormwater runoff

Stormwater outlet on the beach can degrade water quality after rain.

  • Low risk: Slippery rock platforms

Sharp and uneven boulder/cobble sections at the north and south ends require careful footing.

  • Low risk: Tidal currents around point

Small reef gap at Flowerpot Point is risky at higher tides; strong tidal flows possible around the point.
