Black Island (West Reef) is a lesser-known snorkeling gem in the Whitsundays, offering easy-access snorkelling just off the beach at the day-use area. This fringing reef surrounding the island is home to vibrant hard and soft corals, giant clams, sea turtles, and a kaleidoscope of reef fish. Part of the Whitsunday Islands National Park, the island's sheltered western side provides calm conditions ideal for exploring the shallow reef gardens. With fewer crowds than more famous Whitsunday spots, Black Island rewards snorkelers with a serene, wild setting and excellent underwater visibility during the cooler dry season.

Moderate risk: Marine stingers
Stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are present in Whitsunday waters during the warmer months. A stinger suit is strongly recommended.
Moderate risk: Offshore current
Current can be strong offshore, particularly near the northern end of the beach. Best dived on a slack tide.
Low risk: Tidal currents
Outgoing tide can create currents around the reef edges, especially on the western side. Snorkel close to shore and check tide times.
Low risk: Depth at high tide
Snorkelling is a bit deep at high tide, making it more suited to confident swimmers.
Low risk: Variable visibility
Visibility typically ranges from 2-10 metres, which can be reduced after windy weather or strong tides.
