Sheltered by dramatic sandstone cliffs and a flat-topped offshore reef known as Shag Rock, Birdrock Beach is an intimate cove tucked below the Esplanade in Mount Martha on the Mornington Peninsula. Crystal-clear, calm waters and rocky reef gardens create a natural amphitheatre that feels almost Mediterranean. Snorkellers explore underwater rock formations teeming with life, while the secluded setting and wooden staircase access give it a hidden-gem feel. Best visited at high tide when the reef pools are at their most vibrant.

Moderate risk: Westerly wind swells
Exposed to westerly winds and waves; strong winds can produce waves large enough to form a bar and rip currents.
Low risk: Boat traffic
Port Phillip boat traffic can be heavy near the offshore reef; always tow a dive buoy with a flag.
Low risk: Difficult cliff access
Access via a wooden staircase down steep cliffs; can be slippery when wet and challenging to carry gear.
