Bird Rock is a stand-out dive and snorkel site within the Governor Island Marine Reserve, just off the coast of Bicheno on Tasmania's east coast. Named for the seabirds that perch atop its rugged granite outcrop, the site features underwater caverns, swim-throughs, and vibrant temperate reefs adorned with colourful sponges and sea tulips. The cold, crystal-clear waters offer excellent visibility and a chance to explore a dynamic granite boulder-scape teeming with temperate marine life, from rock lobsters to butterfly perch. Part of a network of east-coast dive sites that includes nearby Hairy Wall and The Canyon, Bird Rock is accessible from shore and provides a rewarding experience for those prepared for the chill.

Low risk: Cold Water Temperature
Tasmanian east coast waters are consistently cold (12-17°C year-round). Hypothermia risk without adequate wetsuit protection (5mm+ recommended).
Low risk: Variable Ocean Swell
Exposed to easterly swells that can reduce visibility and create challenging surge conditions, particularly around the rock formations and caverns.
Low risk: Rocky Shore Entry
Entry is over slippery, uneven granite boulders. Care is needed when entering and exiting, especially in any swell.
