Bird Island is a tiny, rocky islet in the Whitsunday Islands chain, renowned for its vibrant fringing coral reefs that teem with marine life. Sheltered waters wrap around the island, offering excellent snorkeling conditions with calm, clear visibility. The reef drops off dramatically from the shoreline, with bommies, coral gardens, and sandy patches attracting a kaleidoscope of reef fish, sea turtles, and occasional reef sharks. It's a favourite stopover on Whitsundays sailing tours, prized for its pristine, uncrowded underwater environment and easy beach access to the reef.

Low risk: Outgoing tide current
The area experiences tidal currents that can be strong around the island's points and reef edges, particularly during outgoing tides. Snorkelers should stay aware of the tide cycle and avoid drifting too far from the group.
Low risk: Boat traffic
Boat traffic from touring vessels and private yachts visiting the island. Snorkelers should be mindful of boat channels and stay close to the reef edge markers.
Low risk: Sharp coral
Sharp coral formations are present in the shallow fringing reef. Snorkelers should avoid touching the coral to prevent injury and protect the marine environment.
