Big Reef lies about 1.2 km south of Point Danger off Portland, Victoria, on the Discovery Coast. This exposed offshore reef drops from 5 m to 15 m depth, with a quick drop on the eastern side and a gradual slope to the west. Once a major contributor to the commercial abalone catch, the reef still offers dramatic underwater terrain with crevices, boulder fields, and kelp beds. Snorkeling here is best on calm, low-swell days with light winds. The site sits within reach of the Point Danger Marine Sanctuary, known for its diversity of sea slugs, reef fish, and eagle rays. Access is primarily by boat from Portland Harbour ramps, about 15 minutes away.
