Lying 5 km southeast of Cape Conran in east Gippsland, Beware Reef Marine Sanctuary is a diver's paradise — an isolated granite pinnacle that rises abruptly from the sandy seafloor, crowned with a bull-kelp rim. Its unique position where warm East Australian Current waters meet cooler Bass Strait currents creates a rare fusion of temperate and subtropical marine life. The exposed rock sits 2 m above the water at low tide, and beneath the surface the reef stretches 1 km to the southeast, dotted with three historic shipwrecks: the Ridge Park (1878), Albert San (1915), and SS Auckland (1871). Vast gardens of pink coralline algae, dense kelp forests, and curious Australian fur seals await those who make the journey.

High risk: Exposed offshore location
The reef is exposed to all wind directions; safe access is only possible in calm conditions by experienced boat operators.
Moderate risk: Strong currents & rips
Convergence of the East Australian Current and cooler westerly Bass Strait currents can create unpredictable and strong water movement around the reef.
Moderate risk: Vessel traffic & boat access only
Access is by boat only from the Cape Conran ocean ramp, which is exposed to south-westerly winds. No shore-entry option exists.
Low risk: Cold water temperatures
Southern Ocean influences keep water temperatures cool year-round, increasing risk of cold-water shock and hypothermia for inadequately equipped snorkelers.
