Beware Reef is a diver's paradise rising abruptly out of the sandy Gippsland seafloor, 5 km southeast of Cape Conran and just over 3 km offshore. This isolated granite outcrop is encrusted with colourful marine life and surrounded by a thick rim of bull kelp. Its unique position at the convergence of warm eastern Australian and cool Bass Strait currents creates a rare mix of temperate and warmer-water species. The reef harbours three historic shipwrecks — the Ridge Park (1878), Albert San (1915), and SS Auckland (1871) — while Australian fur seals, giant Maori octopuses, and abundant fish life make every visit unforgettable.
