Batt Reef is a vibrant outer-shelf coral reef about 33 km northeast of Port Douglas, forming part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. This expansive reef system features a mosaic of coral bommies, sandy patches, and gutters that create diverse snorkelling terrain. The reef is a regular stop for day-tour operators who bring snorkellers to protected lagoons where the water often clears to stunning visibility. Named after Lieutenant Henry Batt of HMS Rattlesnake, the reef is famous for its abundant marine life, colourful coral gardens, and the occasional sighting of sea turtles gliding through the shallows. It's a classic outer-reef experience with reliable conditions and spectacular underwater scenery.

Moderate risk: Tidal currents
Strong tidal currents can sweep across the reef, especially during spring tides. Snorkellers must stay close to the tour boat and follow guide instructions.
Moderate risk: Stinger season (jellyfish)
Stinging jellyfish (box jellyfish and Irukandji) may be present in warmer months, typically November to May.
Low risk: Intense tropical sun
The tropical sun is intense year-round. Sunburn and heat exhaustion are risks without adequate protection.
Low risk: Sharp coral
Sharp coral edges and reef structures can cause cuts and scrapes. Snorkellers should avoid touching the coral.
Low risk: Boat traffic
Boat traffic in the area includes multiple tour vessels and private craft. Snorkellers should be aware of their surroundings.
