The Batavia wreck lies in just 4–6 metres of crystal-clear Indian Ocean waters on Morning Reef within the remote Houtman Abrolhos archipelago, 60 km west of Geraldton. This shallow historic shipwreck — the remains of the Dutch East Indiaman that ran aground in 1629 amid a dark tale of mutiny and murder — is accessible to snorkellers of all levels. The hull outline remains visible, still fitted with cannons and anchors, offering an extraordinary underwater encounter with Western Australia's most infamous maritime relic amidst pristine coral reef ecosystems.

Moderate risk: Remote location
The wreck site is 60 km offshore with no immediate emergency services — accessed only by organised charter tours. Medical assistance is hours away.
Low risk: Strong ocean currents
The Abrolhos Islands sit in the Indian Ocean where tidal flows and ocean currents can be strong around the reef system. Check conditions before entering.
Low risk: Sharp coral and wreck debris
The wreck structure includes metal cannons, anchors, and coral-encrusted debris. Snorkellers should wear protective footwear and avoid touching.
Low risk: Limited visibility events
Swell and wind can stir up sediment, reducing the typically clear water visibility. Best conditions are during calmer months (April–October).
