Where the Barwon River meets Bass Strait, this estuarine snorkeling zone sits within the protected Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary. The sheltered eastern side offers calm, river-influenced waters with basalt reefs teeming with life, while the western side meets the ocean swell over ancient sandstone formations. Snorkel through shallow kelp forests of Crayweed and Bull Kelp, past sponge gardens and sandstone arches, exploring rock pools and the rich intertidal zone that makes this 17-hectare sanctuary a marine biology treasure trove on the Bellarine Peninsula.

Moderate risk: Cliff instability
The Barwon Bluff has experienced recent rockfall events. Keep clear of cliff bases and avoid walking, sunbathing, or playing on or under the cliffs.
Moderate risk: Incoming tide cutoff
High incoming tides can cut off access around the Bluff with no safe passage at higher tides. Check tidal information before entering the water.
Moderate risk: Ocean swell exposure (western side)
West of Point Flinders, the intertidal platforms and beach are exposed to persistent high-energy south-westerly swells from Bass Strait.
Low risk: Cold water temperatures
Surface water temperatures average 17.5°C in summer and 13.5°C in winter, posing cold-water shock risk without adequate wetsuit protection.
