At the mouth of the Barwon River near Barwon Heads, this 17-hectare marine sanctuary protects a remarkable mosaic of basalt and sandstone reefs teeming with life. Snorkellers can drift over colourful sponge gardens, swim through towering kelp forests of Crayweed and Bull Kelp, and explore shallow rock platforms packed with anemones, seastars, and molluscs. The sheltered eastern side offers calm conditions influenced by tidal currents, while the western side catches Bass Strait swells. Look for the remains of the 1853 shipwreck Earl of Charlemont on the outer reef edge — all within a compact, easily accessible site.
