Barracuda Bommie is a giant coral pinnacle rising from 26 metres of sandy sea floor on the outer edge of Agincourt Reef, part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park off Port Douglas. This spectacular submerged bommie (a coral outcrop) is famous for the swirling schools of barracuda that patrol its flanks, alongside abundant marine life. The pinnacle's dramatic vertical structure is cloaked in vibrant corals, soft corals, and gorgonian fans, making it a magnet for pelagic fish and reef species alike. Snorkelers drift over the bommie's top in clear blue water, watching the reef's ecosystem unfold beneath them.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Strong tidal currents

Whale Bommie drops to depths beyond 20 m; strong currents can sweep snorkelers off the bommie. Stay aware of your position relative to the boat.

  • Moderate risk: Marine stingers

Stinger season in tropical Queensland waters. Jellyfish (including box jellyfish and Irukandji) may be present from November to May.

  • Low risk: Remote offshore location

The site is a deep-water bommie on the outer reef, 50 km offshore. Emergency response is distant.

  • Low risk: Ocean currents

The site is on the outer reef edge where currents can be moderate to strong, especially on changing tides. Snorkelers should be comfortable in moving water.

  • Low risk: Deep water adjacent to bommie

The bommie rises from 26m depth — deeper water surrounds the pinnacle, requiring good buoyancy control and awareness of depth.
