Barlings Beach Dive is a sheltered shore-entry snorkel and dive site on the NSW South Coast, just south of Tomakin. With a maximum depth of 11 m, the site features a network of rocky gutters, crevices, and small caves teeming with marine life — including a resident Wobbegong shark often spotted in its cave. The easy access from the sand and calm conditions make it a favourite for underwater photographers and open-water training alike. Best dived on a north-easterly breeze, this site offers clear, calm water perfect for exploring the rocky reef habitat within Batemans Marine Park.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Topographic rips

Topographic rips can form along the beach, especially near the rocky spit, creating unexpected currents.

  • Low risk: Rocky spit underwater at high tide

The sand-and-rock spit connecting to Barlings Island is submerged at high tide, potentially disorienting swimmers and creating uneven footing.

  • Low risk: Urchins in reef crevices

Black-spined and small urchins hide in hollows and crevices on the rocky reef areas around the island.

  • Low risk: Rocky gutters and crevices

The site is characterised by rocky reef gutters and crevices that can catch fins or cause scrapes if not navigated carefully.

  • Low risk: Wobbegong shark encounter

A resident Wobbegong shark is known to inhabit a small cave in the area. Though generally docile, it should not be disturbed.

  • Low risk: North-easterly wind dependency

Best conditions require a north-easterly breeze; other wind directions can reduce visibility and stir up surge.
