Bar Beach South is a naturally enclosed, crescent-shaped beach tucked behind a rocky headland on Narooma's coastline. Sheltered by a training wall and a southern channel wall, the calm, shallow waters create a safe natural pool that is widely regarded as one of the safest spots on the Eurobodalla coast for children to learn to snorkel. The adjacent Apex Park offers picnic tables and BBQs, making it a perfect family day out. The beach's protected conditions mean visibility is often excellent, revealing seahorses, squid, juvenile fish, crabs, and schools of small reef fish amid rocky crevices and seagrass beds.

Low risk: Shark net limits visibility
The protected swimming enclosure has a fine net that can reduce underwater visibility and may snag fins or gear.
Low risk: Shallow water at low tide
At low tide the water becomes very shallow, making snorkelling less comfortable and increasing risk of scraping on sand or seagrass.
Low risk: Training wall rocks
Submerged and exposed rocks along the northern training wall can be sharp. Wear aqua shoes and avoid entering near the wall.
Low risk: Outgoing tide current
During an outgoing tide, a mild current can develop near the channel entrance. Stick to the central shallows.
Low risk: Boat traffic near channel
The beach is adjacent to the Narooma channel entrance. Boat traffic may pass near the southern end of the beach.
Low risk: Sandbar shifts
The protective sandbar can shift after storms or king tides, altering the protected pool's shape and depth.
Low risk: Bluebottle jellyfish
Bluebottles (Physalia physalis) can drift in on north-easterly winds, particularly in summer months.
Low risk: Rip currents near breakwater
Rips and currents can develop around the breakwater and inlet heads, especially near the deeper end of the enclosure.
Low risk: Deep water
Water depth exceeds 2 metres beyond the first few metres from shore — swimmers should be confident in deep water.
Low risk: Seal presence on breakwater
Australian fur seals occasionally haul out on the breakwater; regulations and signage apply to keep a safe distance.
