Tucked away within the Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary, Banksia Point is a quiet, seldom-visited snorkelling and dive site on the Beaumaris foreshore of Port Phillip Bay. Its shallow, protected waters (1–3 m depth) open onto a sandstone reef platform with sea caves and gutters teeming with marine life. On calm days with northerly winds, the water clears beautifully, making this a peaceful urban escape perfect for beginners, night dives, and anyone wanting to explore one of Melbourne's richest marine sanctuaries without the crowds.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Onshore southerly winds

Moderate to strong onshore winds from the south to north-west create rough, white-capped water making entry and exit dangerous.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic

Port Phillip Bay sees recreational and commercial vessel traffic. Snorkellers should tow a dive buoy with a dive flag for visibility.

  • Low risk: Road crossing

Parking is on Coronet Grove; visitors must carefully cross Beach Road to reach the steps down to the beach.

  • Low risk: Low visibility after wind

After strong onshore winds or rain runoff, visibility can drop significantly. Best dived just before high tide on calm days.
