Balnarring Reef lies just offshore from Balnarring Beach (also known as Tulum Beach) on the Western Port Bay side of the Mornington Peninsula. This gentle, sandy shoreline gives way to shallow patch reefs and seagrass beds within the 70-hectare Balnarring Foreshore Reserve, part of the internationally recognised Western Port Biosphere Ramsar site. Calm, protected waters make it an ideal beginner-friendly snorkel spot, with easy shore access and plenty of rockpools to explore at low tide.

Low risk: Shifting sandbars
Western Port Bay's sandy bottom can shift, creating shallow sandbars that change depth and shoreline contours over time.
Low risk: Boat traffic near yacht club
The Westernport Yacht Club launches boats from the beach — be vigilant near the launch area during active months.
Low risk: Low tide exposure
The reef and rockpools are very shallow at low tide, with limited snorkelable water; check tide times before setting out.
