Bald Rock Dive Site sits at the eastern end of Great Keppel Island, off Yeppoon on the Capricorn Coast, within the southern Great Barrier Reef. The rocky reef here drops from 6 to 15 metres, carved with gutters, ledges and small caves that shelter a wealth of smaller marine life. Best explored on a low tide snorkel when the reef is at its most accessible, this site offers a more intimate coral-reef experience away from the busier island beaches. The surrounding waters are part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, with public moorings available to protect the coral below.

Moderate risk: Stinger season (marine stingers)
Box jellyfish and irukandji may be present in tropical waters from November to May. Wear a stinger suit.
Moderate risk: Tidal currents
Strong tidal currents can sweep around the eastern end of Great Keppel Island, particularly during outgoing tides. Snorkel with a buddy and time your visit around slack water.
Low risk: Outgoing tidal currents
Currents can develop around the island's beaches and reef edges during outgoing tides. Swim with care and check tide times.
Low risk: Coral cuts
Sharp coral on the fringing reef can cause cuts. Avoid touching coral and wear reef shoes.
Low risk: Sun exposure
Intense tropical sun year-round. Use reef-safe sunscreen, hat, and rash guard.
Low risk: Shallow reef at low tide
The reef is shallow at low tide and rocks can be close to the surface, creating a risk of contact with sharp coral or rock ledges.
Low risk: Boat traffic
Boat traffic accessing the public moorings and dive charter vessels in the area requires awareness when snorkeling at the surface.
